Hinkley Point A Site
Hinkley Point A is located on 19 hectares on the Somerset coast. Low carbon electricity generation ended in 2000 following 35 years of safe operation. Decommissioning began in 2005 when defueling was completed.
The site is uniquely positioned, adjacent to both an existing EDF advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) station (Hinkley Point B) and a new-build EDF site (Hinkley Point C).
Work is focussed on the safe and secure retrieval of wet radioactive waste
Key priorities 2024-5
- Complete the boiler house asbestos remediation project, drawing to a close a 5+ year package of conventional hazard reduction work.
- Complete all dry waste vault project activities.
- Install and commission a replacement fire system in the radiological controlled area.
- Progress inactive commissioning of the radioactive resin waste encapsulation system.
- Complete design work for a new waste package loading facility.
- Continue to process and despatch low level waste off site.
- Fill, condition and load the first waste package into the interim storage facility.
